Just as foodies have Restaurant Week, fashionistas have New York Fashion Week. For months now, we have been waiting as designers carefully curate the finishing touches to their runway shows, and from Thursday, September 6 to Friday, September 14, this stylish takeover will finally descend upon us with excitement and all kinds of unexpected fabulousness.

Fashion Week is truly about experiencing the buzz throughout the city rather than attending just one event. While many of the highly-anticipated fashion shows are by invitation only, that doesn’t matter because the streets of New York will be overflowing with colorful photo-ops and random flashes of beauty.

Already, the thrill of wandering the city streets promises a host of unique discoveries, and during Fashion Week you can expect your explorations to take on an even more dazzlingly, design dynamic. Many of the best shops around the city are offering wonderful sales, free events and parties that celebrate the world of fashion and beauty, and Model and celebrity sightings will become an everyday occurrence (even more than normal). New Yorkers love a challenge and many of them will find themselves amping up their style game and dressing to the nines just to keep up.

Yet for loyal, fierce Fashion Week fashionistas…

Fear not! All of your favorite mainstays will be on hand to assert their runway royalty status. From Michael Kors and Ralph Lauren to Tory Burch and Oscar de la Renta, expect these heavy-hitters to bring their stylish A-game to the Spring 2019 slate of fashions. Just as exciting is the much-anticipated return of Vivienne Westwood, and the arrival of newcomers Rodarte and Kozaburo Akasaka - both coming off successful pre-NYFW campaigns to earn a coveted spot on the schedule.

Making your way to the city for the most stylish week on NYC’s calendar of events? Book a suite with us at The Manhattan Club. Located in the heart of the action in Midtown, our luxurious, yet comfortable accommodations are beautifully designed to make you feel right at home.

Cinephiles and Movie Buffs, Rejoice! The 56th New York Film Festival is Almost Here!

Now In Its 56th Year, The New York Film Festival Returns To Celebrate Our Love Of Film

Movie set film
Fall is fast approaching, and its return heralds in one of the most highly-anticipated events of the year - the 56th New York Film Festival (NYFF56).

Running from September 28 to October 14, screenings will soon start to light up the various venues at Lincoln Center. Founded in 1963, the mission of celebrating and bringing together the work of both the legendary actors and filmmakers, as well as celebrating fresh new talent from around the globe remains the same. So to remains the process of carefully curating all of the new movies that are shown throughout the entire two week period.

All sections of the Film Festival are not equal

Even though the New York Film Festival has the distinction of being a non-competitive event, there are specific designations paid to the most significant premieres that still set them apart from the rest. Annually, 30 films are selected for the festival’s Main Slate. These are the films that you can expect to see peppering the critics’ “Best Of” lists at year’s end. And, with an even further pronouncement of their importance, three films are given the illustrious labels that set them apart from the other 27. This years picks are:

  • Opening Night - The Favourite (dir. Yorgos Lanthimos)
  • Centerpiece – Roma (dir. Alfonso Cuarón)
  • Closing Night – At Eternity’s Gate (dir. Julian Schnabel)

The Main Slate selections may romance and win us over in the press, but there are others that deserve just as much acclaim. These “spotlights” on Documentary, Projections (avant-garde film), Convergence (interactive storytelling), and Revivals (restorations and rediscoveries) round out the festival, promising something for every movie buff and devoted cinephile.

Never being limited to just movie screenings, the festival also entertains us with a wide variety of glamorous events and lively, interactive panel discussions with the actors, directors and filmmakers.

With the excitement building, The New York Film Festival is already being marked on everyone's calendar. And, lucky for us, The Manhattan Club is just a short walk away from Lincoln Center, making us the perfect destination for your silver screen stopover.

Ever Wonder What’s Free in NYC?

Discover some of the best that our city has to offer with our list of what's free in NYC!

NYC travel map
Our city might not be known for being budget-friendly, but it really is possible to enjoy a fabulous NYC getaway without breaking the bank. If you're planning to visit, or even if you live here, why not save when you can, so that you can splurge when you want? Here's how!

Research the “free admission” hours for many of the top NYC museums.
It's a well-kept secret, but many of our museums have “pay what you wish” or "donation only" hours, so check their websites before you go, and plan your visit accordingly. One of the most popular museums, the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) even has a Free Friday promotion between the hours of 4 and 8 pm,

Warm weather means many “priceless” activities to explore.

  • Visit the many public beaches, or take in the sights and sounds of Coney Island (it's free to walk the colorful boardwalk or splash your feet in the ocean, so why not indulge in some delicious carnival eats while you're there).
  • Enjoy the NYC skyline from the decks of the always free, Staten Island Ferry.
  • Take a “Free Tours by Foot” in Central Park, either with a personal tour-guide or with your handy digital device leading the way (thanks to a downloadable app).
  • Check out the free 20 minute kayak rentals on the Hudson River at Pier 26, Pier 96, or Governors Island.
  • Get your best Namaste on while relaxing with some outdoor yoga at Bryant Park (Tuesday mornings and Thursday evenings)!

Take in a show for free.

Many of the top daytime and late night shows have free audience taping and backstage tours. See Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert, Trevor Noah, and many other comedy greats - while free, tickets go quickly and should be reserved in advance. And, depending on the time of year, the public parks are also full of free entertainment from concerts, movies, and even Shakespeare!

As always, The Manhattan Club has a variety of special offers and packages that will keep you well within your budget, without limiting any of your fun!

It’s hard to beat the final Grand Slam tennis championship of the year in terms of annual attendance. Taking place in 2018 from Monday, August 27 through Sunday, September 9 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the US Open in NYC is expected to draw approximately 700,000 fans to Flushing Meadows.

Tickets are on sale all summer, and although reserved seating for the marquee court at Arthur Ashe Stadium can be limited, most attendees say that the best way to truly experience this phenomenal event is with a “Grounds Pass”, allowing access to all of the other courts at the Center.

No ticket? Don’t worry! New York City fully embraces being the home of the final tennis championship of the year and the excitement cannot be held within the gates of the Center. There are other fun events like US Open Community Day which opens up the grounds for free, allowing all to watch the doubles and juniors compete. Also, the entire week leading up to the tournament has been lovingly dubbed “Fan Week”, with many free events highlighting the lively atmosphere of this “only in New York” tennis event!

If you don’t plan on going to Flushing Meadows, they’re many other ways to catch the action. Bars and restaurants throughout the city host boisterous viewing parties and tennis becomes larger-than-life on the big screen at US Open Live in Madison Square Park and Rockefeller Center.
