Our Fierce FAQ for New York Fashion Week

Before the frenzy starts on Friday (February 8), we have a quick refresher course to get
you caught up on all things New York Fashion Week!

Gplus-In-Stream_Wide___model nyc model-2765525_640
Deep breaths, fashionistas – New York Fashion Week (NYFW) is almost here. From Friday, February 8 through Saturday, February 16, the City That Never Sleeps will once again be a seemingly never-ending cavalcade of runaway shows, insider events, and of course photographs documenting the latest and greatest trends in the fashion world! Yet before the lights rise on the first fierce fashion moment, we've put together a quick FAQ to break down all of the basics!

So…what is NYFW?
Originally known as “Press Week”, America joined the fashion ranks during World War II as they could no longer access the shows that were commonplace throughout Europe. Ever since, NYFW has spotlighted the industry’s top designers and their upcoming collections.

And it takes place in February?
It is a bi-annual “week” with a “Spring” edition taking place in September. For the upcoming “Fall” February version, the designers will be showing their collection for the season ahead (so that would be for Fall 2019).

But it’s only in New York?
All of the major style capitals across the globe have their own Fashion Weeks. NYFW kicks off “Fashion Month” with the festivals in London, Milan, and Paris following subsequently.

Which designers will be showing their fashion this year?
There is no official governing body that decides, but the highlighted designers each year are routinely those with clout and seniority in the fashion world. The full list of participating designers is available here with clickable biographies, highlighting both their history along with what one can expect from them and their collection this year.

Does NYFW only consist of runway shows?
Not in the slightest. While many of the top runaway shows are closed to the public, there are other ways for you to experience NYFW for yourself:
NYFW Experiences – intimate fashion week experiences ranging in price and access, allowing you to get the most out of your personal fashion getaway!
- Beyond the Shows – panels, seminars, film screenings all focused on fashion and its effect on culture (full schedule is available now).

Where should I stay when coming to the city for NYFW?
The perfect complement to any New York City Fashion Week experience is booking a suite with us in NYC at The Manhattan Club.

4 Experiences To Check Off Your NYC Bucket List This Winter

No matter how long your NYC Bucket List is, these are four must-see destinations to consider checking off this year!

The City That Never Sleeps is more than just a nickname for New York City – it’s a lifestyle! There’s always so much to see and do that your list of “must-see” attractions could almost overwhelm you, but fear not - The Manhattan Club has a wonderful Bucket List starter guide for you.

These are the four quintessential NYC Bucket List destinations that we think you should consider crossing off first:

1. Head to the top of the Empire State Building.
102 stories up, you will get quite a view of the city below from the top of this quintessential, New York City Art Deco skyscraper. On a clear day, the views can stretch as far as Pennsylvania and Massachusetts! Another top observation deck in Manhattan – head to the “Top of the Rock” at Rockefeller Center!

2. See a Broadway Show.
No longer just a luxury, seeing a show on The Great White Way is affordable with many theaters offering discounted tickets throughout the year. Take advantage of promotions like Broadway Week (which is happening now) or day-of lottery seating to score the best value. Popular choices such as Hamilton may be a bit of a challenge to get, but are well worth seeking out for a truly unforgettable night on the town!

3. Take in the lights of Times Square at night.
Another nighttime diversion, take in the iconic neon lights of “The Crossroads of the World”.

4. Take a walk through Central Park.
A green oasis in the urban jungle, this park is so massive in size, it would be impossible to see everything housed within on one trip through. From the Central Park Zoo to the famed carousel, there are things hidden within for the whole family. Or, forget about the list of attractions and just take in the beauty of the Park itself!

Complete this NYC Bucket List visit by staying at a truly list-worthy hotel – The Manhattan Club! Located in the heart of Midtown, our luxurious suite accommodations are the perfect home-base for any NYC adventure!

There’s never a bad time to swing by the Great White Way to see a show, but twice a year it would be crazy not to consider grabbing some friends and family and heading to the city for a wonderful night of live theater. This year, NYC Broadway Week Winter 2019 runs from Monday, January 21 through Sunday, February 10.

And no, your math skills are not that rusty – Broadway Week in NYC is not one week but actually three! Yet the real math about this event is the 2-for-1 Ticket Offer that is at the core of this celebration, promising that you will get 50% off each ticket! Besides these fun facts, there are a few other basics any Broadway Week patron should know:

  • There is a list of over 20 participating shows (available here). From tried and true family-favorites like Aladdin and Wicked to a certain Phantom and his longest-running show in history, there promises to be something for everyone!
  • There are two general ticket sales codes to remember to unlock the savings – BWAYWK for standard 2-for-1 tickets and BWAYUP for the “upgraded option” (seats closer to the stage than the regularly-priced seats).

Formerly known as The Winter Antiques Show, this ten-day fair at the Park Avenue Armory is the leading art and antiques festival in America, with over 70 of the globe’s top exhibitors in fine art showcasing their works for view and purchase. From ancient times to mid-century modern, each work has been authenticated to ensure its validity.

The Winter Jazzfest in NYC is The Perfect Cure to the Post Holiday Blues!

The presents have been opened and “The Ball” has dropped, but consider ringing in your New Year in swinging style at the Winter Jazzfest in NYC.

Jazz band-691224_640
Often thought of as the Jazz Capital of the World, our amazing city is gearing up to play host to the 15th Anniversary of Winter Jazzfest. Since 2005, this annual event has continued to cement its reputation as the best of the best when it comes to new and vibrant sounds throughout the genre. This year, a wonderful series of "Jazz Talks" has been added, bringing together even more talent to the stage in a groundbreaking series of conversations with artists, authors, musicians and many others.
And, just like a musician getting ready for their own Winter Jazzfest in NYC moment, we have some tips on how you can best experience this fabulous nine night affair!

Get In Tune!
This year, Winter Jazzfest runs from Friday, January 4 through Saturday, January 12, 2019. More than 100 performers will take the stage across a variety of venues in the city (key spots include Le Poisson Rouge, Brooklyn Steel and Nublu). Depending upon what type of jazz suits your soul, from the classics with sax giant Gart Bartz to the more experimental riffs of guitarist Mary Halvorson, you'll want to check the line-up before you head out into the city to take in the tunes.

Hit the Stage!
More popular than ever before, the Winter Jazzfest Marathon, has now expanded to stretch across both weekends of the festival. A Half Marathon (January 5) will bring the jazz to Greenwich Village across six venues, while the standard Two-Night Marathon (January 11-12) will blow into 11 joints across Lower Manhattan. Most events are also available on an "a la carte” basis, which is great if you just have a couple of favorites or your time to attend is a bit limited.

Take a Bow!
End your musical evenings relaxing in the luxurious comfort of The Manhattan Club. Conveniently located in Midtown, our suite accommodations provide the perfect home-away-from-home experience for your Winter Jazzfest visit.

Countdown the Top 10 Tips for Celebrating New Year’s Eve in NYC!

If you're planning to celebrate New Year’s Eve in New York City, specifically in the heart of all the action in Times Square, countdown with our ten tips to ensure your night is a fabulous one to remember!

Celebration concert-2527495_640

The countdown to New Year’s Eve in NYC is on – starting with The Manhattan Club’s 10 tips for the ultimate “NYE Times Square” experience!

10. No tickets needed. The annual New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square is a free event (there are no public viewing spaces for sale). Only businesses in the area (such as restaurants and hotels) may be selling tickets for private viewing parties.

9. Arrive early. With no tickets, the event is truly a first-come, first serve affair. If you show up too early, before the barriers are set, you may have to move, so check the Times Square Official Schedule and FAQ for the “opening” time and any other questions that you may have. Plan on showing up in the morning or early afternoon (3:00pm starts the “mad rush”).

8. Come well-fed and pack plenty of snacks. The classic NYC food vendors are not allowed inside the designated area.

7. Dress in layers. You’ll be standing for hours outside. No matter what the weather forecast is, the best bet is always casual, comfortable layers.

6. There's no midnight “champagne” toast in Times Square. Public drinking is illegal in NYC.

5. Take the minimum. Security is always high for New Year's Eve in Times Square, and only small bags are permitted, so try to leave any bags and extras at home.

4. Use public transportation if you can. With the amount of revelers celebrating New Year’s Eve in NYC, forget the car (and even cabs will be in short supply) so subways will be your best mode of transportation.

3. There are no public restrooms, so plan accordingly.

2. See the ascent as well as the famous descent! At approximately 6:00pm, the excitement starts to build as the gigantic crystal globe slowly makes its way to the very top of the pole.

1. Book a room at The Manhattan Club. Make your New Year’s Eve in NYC one to truly remember by staying in the comfort of our luxurious suite accommodations, located only 9 blocks away from the biggest party of the year!

The Manhattan Club’s Guide to The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

The big day is tomorrow and all of New York City is getting prepared! Are you?

Planning to visit New York City for Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade? The Manhattan Club has put together a quick last-minute guide on how to get the most out of this beloved NYC holiday tradition!

Before the big day (TODAY – Wednesday, November 21)

Watch the balloon inflation.
Before Charlie Brown and the Red Power Ranger take to the air, they need to be inflated. From 1:00pm – 8:00pm on the streets around the American Museum of Nation History, all of the larger-than-life balloons will be blown up to their gargantuan final size! It's truly a sight to behold!

Decide on your viewing spot.
Don’t wait until Thanksgiving morning to pick your viewing destination. With around 3.5 million spectators expected, you best be prepared with a few choices. Columbus Circle is ideal for those who don’t want to do the most planning as there are many spaces available. For the early birds, we’d suggest scoping out Central Park West.

IT’S PARADE DAY! (Thursday, November 22)

Get to your spot… early. Even if the parade starts at 9:00am, many are out claiming their spots before the sun comes up. If you are traveling into the city, consider the holiday traffic. (Or maybe next year, decide to stay with us at The Manhattan Club to avoid the inevitable delays).

Be prepared and have a wonderful time!
It's going to be extra cold over the next couple of days, so be prepared for the cold weather that is heading our way, with lots of cozy layers, hats and gloves.
After the last balloon has passed you by, be safe when traveling to your Thanksgiving festivities. Many of those 3.5 million other parade attendees are also trying to get “out of town”. The worst traveling time is said to be around 1:00pm, so consider catching a quick bite to eat, or spend some more time walking around and enjoying the magical sights of NYC!

Wishing you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Four Places That Should Be On Everyone’s List of Holiday Shopping in NYC Destinations!

A returning favorite joins a list of traditional and contemporary destinations to ensure you make the most out of your holiday shopping in NYC!

Christmas wrapping gifts irpexels-photo-1050256

The magical feeling of the holiday season is on full display throughout the streets of New York City, making our beloved metropolis a top destination for gift shopping. From the standard department stores to the ever-present holiday markets in NYC, The Manhattan Club has compiled a list of four can’t-miss spots to enjoy the sights and sounds of the season while checking off the names on your list!

Bryant Park Holiday Market
We’ve already spotlighted this homage to the traditional European open-air markets of yore, yet The Holiday Shops at Bryant Park should be on every shopper’s list of can’t-miss gift giving destinations. Over 100 vendors line aisles of festive outdoor stalls and offer a wide variety of gifts from artisan crafts to designer goods and delicious homemade treats.

A true landmark of our city and known for its festive spirit worldwide (from the spectacular Thanksgiving Day Parade to the film “Miracle on 34th Street”), this retail giant still brings the holiday cheer. Taking up an entire city block, this destination is also famous for its beautifully festive window displays.

Dylan’s Candy Bar
Kids and those young-at-heart won’t want to miss this three-story shop of all things candy. A great place to fill up those stockings, you’ll find sugary delights from every era!

FAO Schwarz
“Return to Wonder” as this NYC landmark returns home after closing its doors in 2015. In a new location at 30 Rock, all of your favorite, larger-than-life, features (such as that giant piano) will return to this Wonderful World of Toys (opening November 16th).

Shopping at any time in The City That Never Sleeps is a fun-filled yet hectic activity. For the holiday season, ensure you have a place to wind down and relax after all of the action when you book a suite with us at The Manhattan Club.
